About Neurosurgery

To understand neurosurgery, it is important to know its two components: neurology and surgical treatment.

Neurology is the study of conditions that affect the central nervous system. This system is composed of the brain, spinal cord, and thousands of nerves that branch throughout the body. A neurosurgeon specializes in the surgical treatment of conditions that affect these systems.

Surgical treatment is a response to a neurological condition. Our physicians will use physical examinations and specialized tests to diagnose your condition and establish a treatment plan. This plan may or may not include surgical treatment. Your neurosurgeon will decide if surgery is indicated and feasible. He or she may try more conservative treatments to avoid an invasive procedure.

If surgery is not necessary, you may be referred back to your family doctor or another specialist for treatment. If surgery is required, we will take the necessary time to explain your condition, the procedure, the risks involved, and what to expect afterward.

We treat a variety of neurological conditions, including:

  • tumors of the brain
  • tumors of the spinal cord
  • nerve injuries
  • ruptured or bulging disks
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • aneurysms
  • vascular abnormalities of the brain and spine
